In August 2020, Navalny became seriously ill on a flight from Siberia to Moscow. He was initially treated in Russia, but after pressure from his family and international leaders, he was transferred to a German hospital and diagnosed with Novichok nerve agent poisoning. Navalny accused the Russian government of being behind the poisoning, which the Kremlin denied.
Navalny recovered from the poisoning and returned to Russia in January 2021, where he was arrested at the airport for violating the terms of temporary detention from a previous conviction, which he and his supporters believed was politically motivated. His arrest sparked widespread protests across Russia.
Navalny was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison in February 2021 for violating his pre-trial detention, a decision that international human rights organizations and Western governments strongly condemned as politically motivated. In August 2023, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison for actions against the constitution. Finally, on 16 February 2024, Alexei Navalny died while walking, according to the Russian government.
