Pablo Escobar. For many a criminal, for others a “saint” who was flawed.
Raised in Medellin, the capital of Colombia, his mother played a very big role in his later life. His mother, Elmida, was a teacher but she was very poor, so the young Pablo and his brother Rodrigo were expelled from school because they walked barefoot due to poverty. So his mother complained about the lack of money and he told her: “When I grow up I’ll give you everything”.
During his schooldays, Escobar made his ‘pocket money’ by stealing tombstones from the cemeteries of Rionegro in central Colombia, where he was born, which he then resold to smugglers. As he grew older, he expanded his ‘business’ to include car theft and kidnapping. He would take up cocaine smuggling a few years later, particularly in the early 1970s.
Slowly he got into the cocaine cartel and his money was so much that he was wasting $2,500 on rubber bands for the money and he had 10% of it every year because the money was either being eaten by rats or molding.
Even today, 26 years after his death, he is still considered one of the greatest “benefactors” in Colombian history, since during his lifetime he had financed the construction of temples, hospitals, soccer fields, and a number of food programs for his poor and homeless compatriots. It should therefore not be considered a coincidence that one of Escobar’s nicknames during his lifetime was ‘Robin Hood’. But also that over 25,000 people attended his funeral. He had tried to pay off Colombia’s debt, not hard since he was extracting 15 tons of cocaine every day.
