Paramahansa Yogananda (Bengali: পরমহংস যোগানন্দ) (5 January 1893 – 7 March 1952), born Mukunda Lal Ghosh (Bengali: মুকুন্দলাল ঘোষ), was an Indian yogi and guru who introduced millions of westerners to the teachings of meditation and Kriya Yoga through his book, Autobiography of a Yogi.

Yogananda was a prolific writer. Divine inspiration found expression in his numerous books, five original sets of Yogoda lessons, hundreds of articles for the magazines, two volumes of poetry in addition to those written for the magazines and lessons, and more than a thousand pages of commentaries on the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita. One of the main characteristics of Yogananda’s writings is their delightful freshness. We can feel the inspiration that was flowing from the divine, through his consciousness, through his pen and directly on to the paper. They are alive! They scintillate with power, wisdom and often with marvelous humor.

According to Yogananda “The illumined sages of India discovered the spiritual science of Kriya Yoga in the long forgotten past. Lord Krishna extols it in the Bhagavad Gita. The sage Patanjali speaks of it in his Yoga Sutras. Paramahansa Yogananda has stated that this ancient meditation method was also known to Jesus Christ, as well as to disciples such as St. John, St. Paul, and others.

Kriya Yoga was lost for centuries in the dark ages, and reintroduced in modern times by Mahavatar Babaji, whose disciple Lahiri Mahasaya (1828–1895) was the first to teach it openly in our era. Later, Babaji asked Lahiri Mahasaya’s disciple, Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri (1855–1936), to train Paramahansa Yogananda and send him to the West to give this soul-revealing technique to the world

What can you write about a prominent figure and a yogi that changed my whole life. The Kriya lineage he brought to the West by the great Yogi Mahavatar Babaji opened the road of what is true yoga not only mere exercises with bodily movements, but first and foremost the kriya initiation, the kriya yoga meditation and specific exercises the lead the pathway to God realization through the path of Raja Kriya Yoga.

“That meditation-expert (muni) becomes eternally free who, seeking the Supreme Goal, is able to withdraw from external phenomena by fixing his gaze within the mid-spot of the eyebrows and by neutralizing the even currents of prana and apana [that flow] within the nostrils and lungs; and to control his sensory mind and intellect; and to banish desire, fear, and anger.” —The Bhagavad Gita V:27-28
